Optometry is a dynamic and evolving field, often misunderstood by the general public and sometimes even within the broader medical community.

In a recent episode of Ryan Reflects, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Gabriela Olivares to discuss her journey in optometry, her passion for patient care, and the importance of advocacy in the profession.

Breaking Stereotypes in Optometry

The discussion began with Dr. Olivares addressing a common misconception: the idea that optometrists aren’t “real doctors.” As she put it bluntly, this couldn't be further from the truth!

Optometrists diagnose, treat, and manage ocular diseases, prescribe oral and ocular medications, and play a crucial role in patients' overall health. The attempt to strip Florida optometrists of the title “physician” was a wake-up call for the profession, but it also served to unite optometrists in their shared mission to protect their scope of practice.

Discovering Optometry: A Journey of Passion and Purpose

Dr. Olivares didn’t always envision herself as an optometrist. Initially aspiring to be an emergency room physician, she discovered optometry through a course at the University of Central Florida that explored various medical professions.

After shadowing ophthalmologists and optometrists, she realized optometry aligned perfectly with her desire for a fulfilling career with work-life balance. She attended Nova Southeastern University for optometry school, managing to graduate with minimal debt through scholarships and by living at home.

Balancing Career, Advocacy, and Motherhood

One of the biggest advantages of optometry, according to Dr. Olivares, is its flexibility. As a mother of two, she appreciates having a schedule that allows her to balance professional and personal life. She works in the largest private practice in South Florida, which is equipped with cutting-edge technology and a team of six optometrists. Her practice provides a collaborative environment where each doctor brings a unique specialty, ensuring comprehensive patient care.

Beyond patient care, Dr. Olivares is also a consultant for Johnson & Johnson Vision, where she educates other doctors on the latest contact lens technologies. This role has expanded her professional experience and allowed her to contribute to the advancement of optometry outside the exam room.

The Importance of Advocacy in Optometry

Dr. Olivares has been heavily involved in advocacy efforts, previously serving as president of the Broward County Optometric Association.

She emphasized the need for optometrists to stay engaged in legislative matters, whether through direct involvement or financial support of their state associations. She explained that legislative advocacy is essential for both scope expansion and protection, ensuring that optometrists can continue providing the best care possible.

Dr. Gabriela Olivares Leading by Example

Another passion of Dr. Olivares is fitness, which she believes is essential for both personal well-being and as a healthcare provider. She practices CrossFit and maintains a rigorous fitness routine, which not only keeps her healthy but also sets an example for her patients.

As she pointed out, optometrists often counsel patients on managing systemic conditions like diabetes and hypertension—so why not lead by example?

A Bright Future for Optometry

Looking ahead, Dr. Olivares plans to continue advocating for the profession, growing her role in industry consulting, and, most importantly, balancing her professional and personal life.

She also encourages young optometrists to seek mentorship, continue learning, and be confident in their expertise.

Final Thoughts

Dr. Olivares’s journey is a testament to the opportunities and fulfillment that a career in optometry can provide. She is an inspiration for optometrists looking to make an impact beyond the exam room.

As we wrapped up our conversation, she left listeners with a powerful message:

“Day in and day out, you are saving eyes, saving lives, and you are in a great profession.”
